You’re doing something good for your body, mind, and spirit, so how unjust that if you’re not careful, breakouts can flare up? If your skin is cared for before, during, and after exercise, working out can be one of the best things you do for your complexion.


Before

Cleanse before you sweat. Easy rule of thumb, right?


Remove makeup before you exercise. If you’re not wearing makeup, cleansing the skin before exercising is still a vital step in keeping your complexion healthy and clear. Bacteria and environmental toxins build up throughout the day. Sweating through strenuous activity invites this bacteria to multiply and take up residence in your pores, leading to breakouts, congestion, and acne.


Moisturizing and applying sun screen are essentials – even if you’re going to be active indoors. Harmful UV rays can penetrate windows and are even emitted by some overhead lights.


During

You’re in the zone of doing whatever gets your blood pumping, but don’t forget to hydrate. You’re losing moisture with every passing second and your skin will be the first to suffer the effects of dehydration.


Sweats pouring from your forehead and it might seem irresistible to wipe it away but remember, those hands may have just been on the mat or the floor of your gym and you know what else is on there? Bacteria, grim, and gunk you don’t want anywhere near your pores. Don’t forget to bring a gym towel to wipe your brow.


Cross contamination of gym equipment also puts your skin at risk. One person’s microbes are another’s acne inducing bacteria. Wipe off equipment before you use it.


After

Hitting the showers post-exercise high? Yeah you are. Make sure to cleanse your face and other breakout prone areas of your body. Forgo super-hot showers for a lukewarm rinse to avoid further drying of already sensitive skin.


Give your face a few minutes to breathe after washing and before reapplying makeup, serum, or moisturizer (don’t forget your sunscreen!). Your body’s temperature is still returning to normal and if you’re like us, you’re flushed and feeling dewy with sweat after that shower. Let your body and face cool, and consider skipping your heavier makeup since pores can act extra thirsty after exercise, absorbing foundation and hypersensitive to exfoliation. Bonus: lighter and less makeup is a time saver, plus you won’t be masking that post-workout glow.


If you didn’t wash your hair, make certain you rock an up-do to avoid pesky around the hairline blemishes.


So go after it, get your heart pumping, your muscles flexing, and your limbs toned up.
